Understanding the Asus2 chord

How it's built: The suspended second (sus2) chord removes the third (the note that defines whether a chord is major or minor) and replaces it with a major second. This leaves the chord formed by the root, major second, and perfect fifth.

How it sounds: Lacking a third, it is harmonically ambiguous and does not define a clear mood. It sounds open, spacious, airy, and very modern. It is a sound that floats with a hopeful and crystalline luminosity.

Where to use it: It is extremely popular in contemporary pop, alternative rock, and worship music for creating enveloping atmospheres. It is used to add space before defining the song's mode or as static color in continuous arpeggios. On the guitar, open sus2 chord shapes (like Dsus2 or Asus2) produce some of the richest and most resonant sonorities on the instrument, famously used by bands like The Police or U2.
